I think the open world in the beginning is best for building relationships with your group, and this game is really shooting for heavy character development, it seems.

I would hope the option to re-visit the open world whenever you like is there throughout the second half of the game, but either way I really like this. Personally I feel games without an established main character regularly have very very weak narratives. The two that stand out the most which are both HUGE titles are Mass Effect and Halo. Both of them are decent games that are supposed to be based around their sci-fi story, but both stories are actually just not good.
