Walking Dead: Season 1, I think, is the first game that really took me aback as to how attached I got to the characters. Episode 3 was freaking rough, man. You never knew where it was going to take you.

I doubt they believe most of what they spew (see: Ted Cruz's blatant pandering to his lunatic fringe, while obviously not believing a word of it), but I think the overall problem is lack of empathy; they don't care about the "other" anyway because they've never met one.

The wasted taxpayer dollars are the mostly northeastern economic conservatives' down payment for their alliance with mostly midwestern and southern religious rubes. I figure they consider it money well spent.

I think you're on to something there. Religion in this country made the choice of ranging themselves with a political ideology during the 70's and 80's, that is conservatism and the Republicans. Well, now they've done it, and alienated the left-leaning among the generation born during the culture wars.
