Yeah "the cloud" is distributed across many points geographically, which is why you hear about Apple building all these massive data centers. (And Google already has a freaking tonne of massive data centers).
Dropbox has in the past encountered errors where the database told the local daemon to delete the local files for an update, but there was no update so no files were pulled down. So backup the local drive as well. Because even data on your drive isn't safe.
