Even one cancelled flight still isn’t worth the hundreds of millions in stock value lost from the nightmare PR fallout from this. United tried to save $300 by being cheap on compensation for being bumped, and it cost them almost a billion instead. Ironic!

Bullshit. It’s the airline’s responsibility to track the location and availability of their own crews, not the passengers. Maybe next time, United should schedule their crews’ shifts so that they’re not hundreds of miles away from the plane they’re supposed to be flying!
