Friends of friends on Facebook are now saying it was a scam and there was never any intent to put on a show. I just ... that was poorly planned even for a scam, IMO.

In the comments of the Washington Post story there is a link to a story by the college newspaper on the issue. It has a few more specifics about how the complaints were ignored and then lied about later.
