My mistake was assuming nobody would possibly be so stupid as to believe these type of ads are legit. Based on recent events, I really need to reassess my understanding of how stupid people really can be.

The skip shift always works the same way, under the same criteria (load/speed), all the time. It doesn’t operate differently on the street vs. a lab test. VW/Audi cars operate differently in the real world vs. a lab when under the identical criteria.

The skip shift was to game CAFE, not EPA. Emissions testing isn’t run on the same test loop as they do to calculate MPGs. Plus, CAFE uses a different test loop than they use for EPA MPG numbers.

You could make an argument that a soft mid-size market would be a reason to introduce a sport model. If sales are down, a sport model could increase factory utilization and increase transaction priced - both things that a company would attempt to pump up in a downturn.
