I heard from one of the drivers of VW’s Dakar Touareg program that the engineers would compete to see how close to empty their car would be at the end of a stage. Extra fuel = extra weight. He said they would sometimes have only 3-4l of fuel by the end of a stage. Winning racers have those kind of details figured out.
