Thanks for this. Really. :) I'm a physicist and a college professor, at a religious school. And honestly, the Bible professors are the ones, shaking up people's religious beliefs, not the science professors.

While I do appreciate how important people's faith are to them, we really need to move past the concept that religion has a place in our science curriculum. For those like myself who are atheists, then science is a great way to explore the cosmos. For a person of faith, then learning something new in a science class…

I behaved like this in college and I was the despairingist, most self-medicating headcase on the planet.

I find it interesting that you need to say that they're "happy" in order to defend the behavior. Few people I knew like this in college—male or female—were, in fact, anything resembling happy.
