Woo hoo! After ~2 years, this is actually my first COTD. Thanks! I'll now exit stage-left, slowly but quickly. :)
Isuzu NPR Box truck, BMW 330i, Honda VFR 750F, and a YZ250F motocross racebike. I have experience at all speeds.
I support any and all Super Trooper responses to this article, because that is exactly what is playing out here in real life and that movie is hilarious.
Let me clarify that I mean in a closed course environment, that being primarily either autocross or a track. You can't push a modern car to its true limits on the road unless you have a death wish, even in a Miata.
A good point, but I'd kind of like to see it both ways, actually. One, so that you have a comparison of the cars "as available" on the street; a true stock vs. stock. The other to show the true chassis/suspension differences.
That does include a better shot of the physical seats; they look decent. But notably, even Toyota's marketing illustration drew a markedly smaller person in the back. We'll just have to see what the reviews / real life deal is. It's not that I'm going to be using it as a people hauler, but having a back seat big…
The base 1-series in the US is the 128i, which a brief google tells me *starts* at about $30k in the real world, so it's out of this fight based on price. For that money you're into the 400hp+ 3600lb 5.0 Mustang, which is a beast of a car.
Without getting into a "how fast is fast" discussion, the general point is that a car with lower thresholds is more fun to drive because those thresholds are more acceptable. IE, the FR-S may break loose in a 200ft radius turn at 50mph, and because you only have 200hp on tap, you've got a lot of pedal motion to play…
He said "car." The Atom is an expensive toy at best.
That would actually be one of the most interesting comparisons, if you could do pure handling stats vs. handling stats. The FR-S's edge in weight would help, and it remains to be seen, but if the Subie STi version gets uprated suspension, that could be extremely interesting.
That is very well-played, sir. Nice job.
They're different but yet not as different as you think. I would cross-shop them. Why? If you want a new or say 1yo car in the high teens - $20k price range, you want manual, and you want RWD, you've got the Mustang V6, this (depending on pricing, hopefully), and the Miata. Despite the Miata's pros, I hate…
That's an excellent point. The Miata may maintain the edge in "nimbleness," as in quickness to change direction, but I get the idea that this car will probably have far better road-holding abilities, better high-speed manners, and hopefully good feel as well. Simply based on the specs and what they say they're going…
Flora-bama jokes. Now this is getting inside. hahahaha.
Haha, I like your spin on the story Raphael. But no hat tip? I has a sad.
Worst thing about the Miata (for hardcore drivers and track nuts) is that it's a convertible. This isn't. That makes it better.
