One possible theory is that the FA20 is still a *relatively* new engine for Subaru. Unlike the EJ25 which has been around since WWII. Perhaps there are nuances in this engine design that make this timing cover reseal slightly more difficult than the older engine, and technicians simply don’t have enough experience…
I imagine its simply a case of the Subaru techs are more familiar with how to work on these engines and use RTV correctly in this applications...though it doesn’t preclude the odd event from occurring. This is why Im always so nervous to tear into factory sealed stuff, its so hard for a tech to put it back together…
