Wow, all this makes me want our public schools to do a unit where the kids read some of these books, and then learn the historical context. It would make a pretty amazing teaching tool, and I distinctly recall how incredibly weak our history curriculum was back in elementary school.

Until pretty recently, Catholic fasting was a lot more hardcore, especially if you were a monk or something. Like, one meal a day with no meat or wine for the entirety of Lent kind of stuff.
