It is a toughy. Maybe Patriot Act stuff?
It is a toughy. Maybe Patriot Act stuff?
On another end.... just look about how “Trucker” is one of the most common(and generally, not bad of a pay) job in pretty much all the States to realizes that driverless vehicles wouldn’t be all that good when that many people gets increasingly pushed toward joblessness or just plain not making as much as they used to.

Setting aside the sickening cost of human live, there are vast economic incentives to fully autonomizing the travelling public; the last estimate for the comprehensive cost to society for a car-related fatality is approximately $5,000,000.
Americans like the freedom of choice, which is why guns are legal and why cars will have the human driven option for the foreseeable future.
Actually the number is closer to thirty six thousand people per year in the USA and, if you include Canada the number goes up to about forty thousand per year.
Thirty thousand people a year die in car crashes
Timescale isn’t so far out. I’d have said probably 25-30 years though. The time to start thinking about it is when the autonomous cars start to fill out the pre-owned market. Once that happens I think the tipping point, especially in big cities, will come on fairly quickly.
The problem I find with that is Americans—probably a very large number of the ‘average Joes’—will complain that their personal freedom of movement is being taken away. No idea what the future actually holds, but the argument can be made, and fairly easily, that by removing my personal ability to get in a car and drive…
Oh sweet. A gun debate. I was hoping for one of those.
Thirty thousand people use to drive here now it’s a ghost town.
I think that the Urban Vs. Rural question makes it far more complex.
You don’t even need weird testing requirements. Most grannies, asshats, and multitaskers will happily let the car do the driving, once that is an option. You just have to worry about the fast and furious types
The US has by far the highest number of gun deaths per capita of ANY 1st world country and even rivaling some 3rd world countries. Don't you fucking lie to us.
I was 20 when the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey came out. I will be long dead before we see anything like that in everyday life (permanent moon bases etc.). Perhaps someday, but not in our lifetimes. Same thing with the driver-less car only roads. It’s easy to make bold (wild) predictions about the future. You get lots…
lol you’re definitely pissing on the parade, but not with logic.
While I can’t supply the studies/evidence to suggest it, I have a feeling that driving is one of those activities that is inherently dangerous regardless of operator skill. So much of driving is about the ability to calculate decisions on the fly, predict others’ behavior, and react quickly. A computer can do all of…
Guns are fun and all and i’m not against them, just came here to say you need to find a new way to back your beliefs. Guns are the easiest, most sure fire way to kill someone. If someone wanted to kill me the last thing i would pick for them to use is a gun. Sure they could use a bomb but good luck making one this day…
What logic? Like there are so many more options for implements of death that are as efficient?
I think the big question is whether that timescale will be one where we’re still alive, or one in the fantastical far future.
