I would vote note true. These kinds of outlandish rumors exist on every campus and more than one person telling the story to Jezebel doesn't prove it's true... It might only prove that the urban legend is popular.

At my university (not Hofstra) the school was involved in discipline and/or administration of Greek chapters through the student life office. They hosted anti-hazing workshops and there was a university employee (entire office actually) overseeing everything. So I believe that Hofstra would have been involved.
