I’ll second the vote on the General Altimax Artics... I was pleased enough with them vs. Blizzaks/etc. that I bought a second set (and that was when I lived in Minnesota).
Being familiar with the story, there was a lot that was accurate. Sure, there were a few inconsistencies and liberties taken. But, overall, it was awesome.
No clue on the Toyotas, but its a somewhat common bypass on the BMWs. Some people remove them totally, others drill them out (so it looks like it is still in place for warranty purposes).

A race team bought street pads for their race car? Man, what else did they do half-assed? We use race pads in our race car (Miata) and can go an entire year on the rears, and two weekends on the fronts.
