"Luck" I think referred to why the girl and not her father was chosen, in the sense that some of the decision isn't predictable and that luck, that cruel mistress, might save one and not spare the other.

I found it gut-punching as well. It's not poured over you all syrupy, you have to allow it. You can project whatever thoughts and feelings you want into the young woman and her father, but I think I know how I'd feel if I were him.
