Honestly, Nintendo plays a different game then Sony, Microsoft and third parties. They are focused on short term profits and getting as much money as they can within 90 days of launch.

Unrelated: Looks like Kotaku has gone full Polygon-layout-but-worse. That home page is a mess to look at. I’m glad clicking on ‘latest’ brings it more in line with my expectations.

This is what happens when you are both extremely popular and refuse to discount your games after a few months of release like your competitors

It amazes me how often Nintendo releases a console that is considered a “failure,” everyone predicts their doom, then they come back and kill it. See Virtual boy -> Gameboy color, Gamecube -> Wii, and Wii U -> Switch.

Now that they're only selling tens of millions, they have no choice but to go third party next gen /s

I always wanted to die like my greatgrandfather.

Because their competitor is making sure controllers are compatible, so they have undoubtedly been getting a lot of questions about whether or not they will follow suit.

I mean, Super Mario World was the first Mario game I ever played, and I always assumed that the cape along with the “super” in the title was an allusion to Super Man, thus explaining Mario’s powers and abilities. I actually thought it was rather cool, because Mario was just an average guy. He wasn’t an alien from

One detail from this leak that I’ve found interesting but I haven’t seen anyone discuss (and I for the life of me can’t find anywhere again) is that an earlier version of Mario’s cape sprite showed him wearing a helmet, which really gives the impression of a daredevil flying through the air. I always wondered how they

Battletoads is an animated beat ‘em up that’s doing everything it can to channel the love and nostalgia around the 1991 release.

That looks terrible. The comedy is way too forced. This reminds me of when people try to remake or sequelize a bad B-movie.

Stress the novelty of VR porn...that should do it.

Unfortunately the best answer to that is to have them try one, which is hard if you don’t have one. The Quest seems to have the effect of making converts out of skeptics pretty instantly, it’s a bit like the Wii in that people’s parents or spouses or grandparents, people who had never had an interest in videogames

AR isn’t even trying to be a big thing yet. Things like hololens and google glass have only ever been niche products aimed at developers and early adopters, expensive almost-prototypes to get the ball rolling on the concept. They haven’t even really *tried* to make it a thing yet, because they’re perfectly aware of

I picked up a Rift S on sale last Thanksgiving because I wanted to be able to play Alyx. It’s corded, but the cord is 5m long so I’ve never even really noticed it because I don’t have a room big enough in my apartment that it ever gets taut, and since turning is usually handled via the controller, it doesn’t get

Well put. The Quest is something very different and much more advanced than any of those other examples (and happens to incorporate many of those same technologies into one seamless package). The proliferation of great third party games and experiences in the Quest store is evidence enough that this platform is taking

I’ve haven’t tried the Vive or Index, but I have tried the corded Oculus and I own a Quest, and the Quest is a whoooole different ballgame. Being cordless and totally portable (with no external tracking required) is just a totally different experience from anything else out there. The graphics are good enough to be

The Quest is a bigger deal than everything you listed. AR has NEVER been a real big deal, since no one has a great implementation of it yet. 3D movies that weren’t actually FILMED in 3D were always going to be garbage.

For me it varied a lot between games. Some didn't bother me at all and some were horrendous. I also got more tolerant the more I used it. Your mileage may vary.

Hi dad.
