As much as it pains me to admit being a fan of the Pistons, I think it's worth noting that Isiah Thomas announced his retirement prior to the Achilles injury. The injury just advanced his retirement date by a month, it wasn't the cause of him never coming back.

I seem to remember quite a few Willis McGahee replays from when his knee exploded in the 2002 National Championship game. This clip shows two replays, but I'm sure that they came back to it later in the game.
