Three point street harnesses are not designed for a crash like this.  It entirely possible that both occupants had their belts on and one was ejected anyway. 

An end over end tumble would put a massive amount of force into the occupants and their 3 point street approved seat belts. The bags would blow on the initial crash (bags at street speeds might save your life, but they also break noses and eye sockets). After the bags blow they immediately deflate and the occupants…

At 140 without a HANS device And supporting cage, it’s likely the deceleration trauma did more internal organ damage than one would typically survive. The air bags likely did more harm than good when they blow at speeds so far outside of their design parameters.
