Let's save some blame for the Democrats (and not just the two who voted against.) The Republican's viciousness is well matched by Dem's cynical manuevering in this case.

Yes, but for every single sane moment she has, there's 10 of these:

I think we need an all-Dolly Parton "10 things", because honestly, she's the bomb.

@dcwonderwoman: I agree that I don't necessarily know what the answer is overall, however in this case, this athlete has been hounded, subjected to forced, invasive medical testing including a psychiatrist, had those test results leaked (something for which, as far as I know, no one in the IAAF has been *fired* even

@dcwonderwoman: But then the question becomes, if it's okay to bar someone for what is a perceived advantage, what next? (And frankly it's not clear that everyone with Semenya's genetic condition gets a physical, competitive edge from it—it could easily be argued that her perceived extra strength, etc., is the result

Oh, how sweet. Palin disemvowelled herself to save Jezebel the trouble.

@meg9: Seriously. I was just thinking that $50 is not nearly enough to compensate for that trauma.

@Slickanicka: I think the problem is that we're just coming to understand the magnitude of how society at large impacts even very young babies when it comes to gender. There was a recent study in which male and female infants were dressed in gender-neutral clothes and adults were told that the girls were boys and boys

@rocknrollunicorn: Right, and he went to Spain and fought the fascists! (George did some really bad things...like informing for the MI6...but he was a dedicated fighter on the left for a long time.)

Psst..Hey Sarah. You know Orwell was a socialist right? (The real kind, not the kind you made up in your head.)

Over at the Stranger's blog, Slog, there's a post about a school in Minnesota where three gay kids have committed suicide in the last year. At least one was a victim of bullying.

@Better_red_than_dead: Sorry—one other thing to add: studies have shown that, especially for those who have menstrual-triggered migraines, there's a cascade effect...so that the more times you have a migraine, the more you are likely to have (in both frequency and severity.) So please, if this is happening to you,

@sabinebeans: I can't answer about weight loss, but one of the side effects of propranalol is a drop in blood pressure which, if you are a tiny person or are clinically underweight, or already have fairly low blood pressure, can be probematic. I'm not underweight (in the slightest) but I was only on propranalol for a

Folks should check out the NY Times series on migraines (featuring Oliver Sacks, Jeff Tweedy and several others talking about their experiences with migraines.) The Times also ran a recent "ask the Dr." series with a migraine specialist doing several different columns on various aspects of migraines. Neurologist

@Xagest: You just made my coffee come out of my nose, so applause for that.

@Persistence: Maybe actually planting devices is not so common, but as a member of a left-wing group I've seen more than my fair share of undercover cops trying to worm their way into perfectly legal meetings on constitutionally protected activities.

@Mathias Jørgensen: Palmer raids, Red Scare, Cointelpro, infiltration of antiwar groups...but sure, yeah, people under surveillance by the state probably deserve it.

@armadillo: I think it was actually supposed to be a stylized version of a Beefeater (Guards at the Tower of London) uniform. But yes, still awesomely crazy.

Are my eyes deceiving me, or do they literally walk the girls down a hallway with a sign that reads "Nobody's ugly at 2 a.m." hanging on the wall?

What's even sadder is that the kids profiled for the most part had understanding, caring parents who were aware of the problem and were really conscious of trying to help them work through it. (Like the little boy who wouldn't count to 10 out loud until he was sure he could do it without messing up.)
