I can see them changing the rules to allow for this kind of action. As long as the runner beats the tag and the runner doesn’t intentionally leave the base after the tag was applied.

The rule is there to prevent players from trying to knock a fumbled ball further towards their goal. This ball was already going out of bounds or would have been caught by the player. The refs are aloud to use judgement to abstain from calls. I want to see the Seahawks lose too, but this is an awfully nit-picky thing…
