People still say “day care” to refer to kids.

I do not think this is universal. “I have to pick up my kids from daycare” is a thing I hear on a weekly basis (if not more often) from multiple friends, coworkers, etc.

Day care is still considered child care. I don’t know your industry/family situation but my guess is you are either in senior care or have a loved one you are helping to take care of, hence why you have this opinion.
