I have interacted with this woman in racial justice groups (full disclosure: I am white). While her attitude toward white people was dismissive, her vitriol for Black folks who worked with white people was despicable. She used terms like “tragic mulatta” to mock their efforts, and was truly pinning her “hood”…

I work in higher ed HR. I love to point to shit like this when the faculty says, “We can’t possibly do background checks on people! How insulting! We know who faculty in our field are.”

Apparently, they don’t.

It depends on the association. I’ve worked with blond haired blue eyed people with “native affiliation” they got it with little issue. “I was able to trace it back to the Dawes Rolls, one of my family members is on there.”

We have a *lot* of these white ppl in the Native community. Like this bitch they are usually taking up space and bandwidth that should be reserved for, you know, actual brown ppl.

It’s an understandable temptation, but impossibly to justify. I have a friend who claimed for decades to be part Cherokee. (To her credit, she never used it to claim tribal affiliation for monetary benefit, she just practiced what she thought were Cherokee rituals and, like, hung out at Cherokee art museums and stuff.)…

Not only that but she was allegedly openly racist and also would call people out for being less black then her becuase they werent from the hood etc. Imagine the audacity to tell an actual black person that they werent as black as you because they werent from the hood.. while knowing damn well you are a white woman…

It takes a special degree of whiteness to immerse yourself in a field like this, yet apparently think none of it applies to you. 

Every time I hear a story like this I just wonder, “White people, why the fuck are we doing this?” Yes, it’s rare, but it happens and it’s just gross on every level.

I’ve an Uncle (he was married to one of my Mum’s sisters) who was one of 17. He was the youngest or second youngest. His oldest nephew is two years older than he is.
