Native women telling a wealthy white celebrity that her actions are harmful and asking her to stop is not “the left targeting its own soldiers” though, it’s a marginalized group asking an extremely privileged person to be better. If Cher or any other personality could be turned or taken down by an oppressed and

This is White Feminism in a nutshell.

Adding on that those who don’t understand why this is offensive and why Cher was called out should check out the twitter feeds of the native women quoted in this article. They really should have been asked for comment on this story to begin with, but since that ship has sailed it would be a good idea to take time to

Either kinja is glitching on me or someone dismissed my comment, but either way here it is again:

Thing is, there is no evidence that Cher is part Cherokee, so it’s not her slur to reclaim.

That is absolutely not what is happening here. The article has done a poor job of explaining the issue. I am not Indigenous, but I follow a number of the people who have been calling her out. Here’s a better explanation:

She claimed her father lived on a reservation near Dallas, but there isn’t one. She keeps insisting she has proof of her claims regarding her father but has yet to present any.

Folks are upset because the song is offensive and exploitative. You don’t mine folks culture for material, especially when those folks are marginalized and underrepresented within the US and the entertainment industry. Just go back to being a full blown racist then. Why do you think you’re doing us any favors by pretending to be “woke”?

There’s no diversity police. You made that up. That’s a straw man you put up so you can point to some odd argument you have occurring in your head.

We have this president because of white fragility and racism.

Is it a discourse when most of the commenters are dismissing the problem and getting offended?

Oooohhh sorry I expect bwtter from people who claim to care about diversity but don’t actually put in the work to push for diverse people. I don’t like being paid lip service either talk about and do the work or stay silent and be complacent

Their silence when Kate was praising Woody Allen was deafening! I know people were making faces but...that ain’t enough

White women don’t notice this when they are in it because this is what our friends look like, this is what most of our world looks like. This is not an anomaly worth noting. This is why diversity is so important at every level, in every aspect of every industry; and diversity can’t stop at a handful of well-known

This is an actress who has repeatedly pushed in career damaging ways on gender issues (the linked interview sees her talk up how she asks those career damaging questions that need to be asked) but now, the moment it potentially shows up a blindspot of her own, instead of stepping up to the plate again and even taking

See I’m catching up on the Christmas special of Who right now and reading this all I can see is the same excuses tokenism of Moffat.
