Apps running in the background. Is there a place where we can see which ones are running?

Yeah, my tethering needs are minimal too. A day or two for emails and headlines when in hospital, hotel, or when broadband hiccups (I've used my tethering three times in past two years).

I have this problem with doubleTwist - in my case Android Market sees it and has been prompting me update for months, but since I bought it from the Amazon market, it can't update it.
