You didn't notice much of a gap because this was basically a stand-alone episode. It only had Morgan, Rick, Carl, and Michone. But it was a very very great contained story that helped tie some things up and make Michone fit with the group and be endeared with the viewer.

I'd rather watch Person of Interest than a movie adaptation.

Contacted would be wrong in this instance since it would indicate contact was actually made, rather than just an attempt to contact the person. If they haven't received any response yet they have to use "reached out" instead of "contacted".
