It's not really the same thing — you're running an OS (or more than one OS) inside of another OS, so you could, say, be running OS X Snow Leopard as your host OS on your Mac Pro, and have guest OSs of OS X Lion, Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, Win2k8r2, Win7, etc, all running at the same time (although to run that many at

In my campaign to combat toolbars, I call them spybars. It works better than I'd have thought.

I'd think it would be pretty easy, so long as you use Fedora as your desktop instead (your Ubuntu VM won't get much use after that, except for trying out whatever cool new desktop of the week they've come up with... ;-)

There are many vendors that I need the contact details for, but don't want to clutter up my phone's contacts with (either personal or work phone) that I find business cards a necessary evil. Maybe when somebody makes a 'contacts' app with keywords that you can add to folks' entries and have them displayed/sorted/etc

Symantec Ghost (and similar software) often ends up being free or $5 if you check Newegg's shell shockers or watch slickdeals. It'll do a lot of the legwork for you in (re)imaging a PC.

What resource runs out on your host OS when you notice it slowing down? Maybe it's how windows 7 swaps (ergo, your disk)?

Use a virtual machine or machines to do everything (except play video games, I suppose, but I mostly play console games these days anyway).

My wife's HP from 2007 still works just fine. I have had good luck with Fujitsu and IBM (Lenovo) in the past as well. My friend's Tosh Satellite had a lot of overheating problems from day 1, so that's the only one I'd specifically warn about (or at least read up about whether they've fixed overheating issues or not).

I recommend a used Canon, maybe a T1i or T2i (both have DIGIC 4), which you should be able to pick up for a few hundred dollars. If you're just starting out, you're a lot better off spending $ on a decent lens than you are on a new camera body. [www.photozone.de] can provide you with enough lens tests to give you an

Pretty sure (I hope) SQLGuru meant "can't [afford to] be fired", since otherwise (depending on what company holds your 401k and their agreement with your current employer) you may have 1 month, 3 months, or until EOY to pay the whole thing off.

In that last photo, the guy in the blue sweater looks like he's about to be thrown across the room by what we call "tornado throw" in SMHKD. That's one way to end an argument....

Lastpass works great for what you want to do with it.

If you plan on doing any post-processing (Picasa/Aperture/Lightroom/Photoshop/etc), take your pictures in RAW format. You just gave yourself a whole bunch of wiggle-room. If you've only ever tried to Photoshop jpegs, you don't know what you're missing yet (and you won't go back once you do).

The best keyboard you can buy if you have to do a lot of typing/keyboarding for a living: Ergo Kinesis Advantage. [www.amazon.com]

I bought a Mac because it was easier for me to tinker with than Windows. Also, at the time (because apparently Apple negotiates like the devil) it was cheaper to buy the model I bought than to buy just the Xeon procs from Newegg... so I considered myself as having been paid to accept the rest of the Mac Pro

I don't know how many times I've had to say "Please give me your business requirements, not technical specs. It's my job to develop the technical requirements and solution. Thanks."

I bought the Macy's brand of a memory foam mattress a year ago, and it's possibly the best money I've ever spent.

I use available nearby things (books, cookbooks, cereal boxes, etc) to build a U-shaped header around the top of my iphone, and set it on a hard, flat surface. It works great - I suppose if I always had post-its with me I might consider using them instead of rearranging counter clutter.

It's pretty tough to cook pasta at work. Two microwaves, two dishwashers, and a coffeemaker, but no stove.

4am or 4pm? Seems like a lot of places are opening at 10pm or midnight on Black Friday Eve, nevermind the places that open at 4am or 5am, so if you work until 4pm, you still be able to get some of the really good deals if you wake up early (or stay up late).
