I have never put a front plate on my 1 series and have never been pulled over for it.
Scan the plate and then print it out on vinyl to wrap on the front fascia.
The front end of my Miata has never been sullied by a license plate, and despite the fact that I am required by California law to have one I've never gotten any static from any LEO I've encountered in the car.
