Warms my heart to see so many jez readers support eugenics. It's almost as if (white) feminists have a long history of supporting such policies.

Yeah, it's not common, but the combination of older women who had this happen to them years ago still being in the healthcare system now plus a few communities or situations in which a provider regularly oversteps their authority means it's still common enough.

To piggyback of what Vulcan Has No Moon said, I know a middle class white woman who was sleeping in the same bed with her baby when it died. (Maybe SIDS? Maybe she rolled over and smothered him?) There may have been a little investigation, but it was done in a way that would be sensitive to her loss.

If you read the story, she and the baby were sleeping in the same bed and it died. If this were a wealthy, white Park Slope yuppie mother "Co-Sleeping", there wouldn't be charges because it would be a "tragic accident" or "SIDS".

The woman is mentally ill and needs a doctor not a jail. Looking at the Boston Globe article it would seem like the baby died of sids and the real issue is that she didn't immediately call 911. As a healthcare provider serving in Virginia, this is no surprise to me. I have never seen a "legal" forced sterilization but I've seen some "Mississippi appendectomies" where a patient was essentially given a sterilization without her informed consent. Every single patient with this story has been a woman of color.
