Let’s also all remember that Max Landis was one of the original ringleaders of the “Rey is a Mary Sue” bullshit. It’s pretty amazing how much he and Josh Trank both managed to immediately piss away all the goodwill they got from Chronicle.

Yeah, you should check out his list of movies that he has stated as influences for The Last Jedi if you like the fact of him pulling from stuff older than the 80's. The man loves his old movies and you can see that easily in “Brick” especially, but pretty much all of his movies at this point.
Don’t you need to be over at Rotten Tomatoes spamming?
Like the actress. Like the character.
All it really spoils is Luke teaches Rey (WHAT A TWIST!) and the lesson gets interrupted. That’s it. Same thing that happened in Empire with Luke and Yoda and in the prequels with Obi-Wan and Anakin: Jedi training gets interrupted a lot.
This was one of the few things I liked about the movie — the perspective of Luke from Ben/Kylo, and Luke’s open and honest description of what he did.
“I find Rian Johnson’s lack of knowledge about A New Hope disturbing.”
“While flying Jedi soundcool . Lea is in the vacuum of space so no gravity no weight . A small push (force pull) right to the door.”
Oy, this is not true. As obnoxious as midiwhatevers are, they are indicators of Force sensitivity, NOT its source.
The greatest part about Star Wars is when in doubt, “the Force.”. There isn’t one single definition or authority on what the Force can and cannot do except for Lucasfilms.
TPM has Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon use a burst of Jedi super speed to escape the droidekas. A power they never use again. They could probably have really used it to get through the energy barriers for the final fight with Maul. Think the force push was also first seen in this movie
It’s fair that you didn’t like it much. I’m not trying to change your mind. But let me just counter that this had a style and hero/legend deconstruction to it that was different from any other SW/Marvel/Disney property I’ve seen. I would agree that Awakens is basically homogenized nostalgia but I honestly think this…
Oh man, I forgot The Good Place should be eligible because it’s fantasy genre. Massive omission :(
He saved the day in one of the most surprising and powerful ways I could never have imagined. Luke’s entire life was filled with struggles, celebrations, victories, and losses, but in the end he finally gained the wisdom so long sought after, giving himself willingly to the force.
Johnson did cite the film Three Outlaw Samurai as a major influence on the Last Jedi, and that showed in the lightsaber fight.
I was also born in 1976, and I totally agree with you. Except, since Leia was my hero, this movie just proved that what I have always thought was right - Leia is the heart of the Star Wars universe, not just the heart of the Resistance. Yes, Luke is “supposed” to be the hero, but it has always really been Leia. She…
I still don’t understand that nihilist viewpoint regarding the OT trio’s fates post RotJ. Nothing they did was a failure simply because a new set of films carried their stories further. They achieved their successes and suffered their failures in their lives as every single person does. If anything it grounds their…
It’s some motherforking bullshirt that The Good Place didn’t make the top ten.
Well the Jedi were inspired in part by samurai so between that and the Praetorian guard fight which made me think of an old samurai film fight scene, I’m not surprised. (Which I loved to bits)
He’s not wrong here. He wanted to try something new. To take risks and produce something original, and not just a throwback to the original trilogy. To make a Star Wars movie for the current generation of fans effectively, and so the angry fanboys are going to lose it and throw threats his way. This is why I’ve come…
