If your CPU caught fire, it wasn’t due to temperatures. CPUs control their temps and will not let them get hot enough to damage and especially combust themselves.

Reliability would be a big factor. Overclocking then constantly maxing out the hardware not only creates high temperatures (super bad for a small, barely vented handheld), but also the wear and tear. Instead of lasting years, your switch would probably die within a year or two (this is what happened to the original…

 Overclocking the switch is less of a heat problem and more of a battery life problem.

No, they never mention the temperature while overclocking. So this is definitely a “use at your own risk” situation.

If I had to guess, they probably optimize it for portable mode to reduce battery drain.

Probably more for the sake of saving battery life. They needed it to survive some length of time to be a portable device.
