I really appreciate your efforts to tie everything to Legends and how often it involves undercover work.
I actually have a really high tolerance/love for bad teen rom coms (I’m literally giving a powerpoint about the extended Cinderella Story universe later today) but between the violent behavior from the brother, and whoever’s decision it was to make joey king get naked for increasingly convoluted reasons, I just…
I really enjoyed this article! Just wanted to point out that Jane Austen didn’t only have a timeless effect on rom-coms but on all fiction - she practically invented the Victorian novel, something she doesn’t get enough credit for by people who think she’s made of chick flicks.
I just realized Rachel Leigh Cook’s character was raised by a single dad in She’s All That as well. What was going on with missing moms in the 90s?
I love Clueless so much and it’s such a happy rewatch movie. (Like A League of Their Own or 10 Things I Hate About You, I will rewatch it anytime) What I loved most about it is that when it came out, I, a 16 year old edging somewhere between goth and punk, enjoyed it just as much as did my classmates (definitely more…
Really feeling all the Clueless love around here! I love that Caroline points out the lack of villains, which is one of my favourite things about it. When those conversations about “what movie universe would you most want to live in” come up I always think Clueless, because nothing bad really happens in its world. The…
Legally Blonde was basically Cher Goes to Law School, so that could have worked.
She’s blinded by desire, else she would have got it: she has no trouble reaching the conclusion that her gym teacher is “same-sex oriented”. In the shot where Christian first appears, there’s a poster just behind him protesting the ban on gays in the military - I wonder who in the school put it up.
Yeah, I guess. But what exactly are they shilling? A 25 year old movie widely available to stream for years, or the 200+ year old works of Jane Austen? Not sure why there’d be a need for this kind of paid content.
A lot of Clueless articles this week because it's the 25th anniversary.
I don’t think Austen says much of anything “unironically”.
Clueless came out the summer before my senior year of high school. It defined 1995/ 1996. We all rushed to Express to buy plaid skirts, sweaters, and knee socks for the first day of school. We still had our tshirts, gym shorts, oversized rugby shirts, and high waisted jeans, but there was a new expectation to DRESS UP…
I’m a massive Austen fan, but I’d somehow never seen this movie until the Rona hit.
I went into this (two decades late) with a very low opinion of Silverstone and came away completely charmed, she’s delightful here.
I didn’t know it was originally written as a TV pilot. Guess it’s ironic that it turned into a TV show afterwards.
Sense and Sensibility is so gorgeous, and Alan Rickman breaks my heart every time. Colonel Brandon is decidedly swoon worthy.
I love clueless. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time, and I always struggle to articulate why it’s so much more than a dumb rom com to people. I’m glad to have an article in my back pocket to try and explain it better.
Holy shit, I was living in Calabasas during that 4 week rainstorm. I used to climb at Laguna Beach, and the enormous boulder there suddenly got rated WAY higher for skill level because all the holds got polished down. Same with some mountain bike trails; they went from craggy terraced steps to smooth, frictionless…
