The trick is to tell them they can have dessert when the adults are done eating, but only if they behave until then. (Most restaurants with kids' menus sell little kids' desserts for a buck or two, sometimes even free with the meal, and since it's something like a tiny dish of plain ice cream, it takes two seconds and

True, which I was kind of clumsily alluding to with “try to avoid getting hit in the face,” but the specifics make the metaphor really complicated. I can kind of see “trying to avoid getting hit in the face” as a metaphor for “getting out once it’s obvious you’re with someone toxic, to minimize the hurt you sustain,”

Fair question. I think those of us who’ve suffered like to think it served a purpose, and maybe sometimes it does (someone mentioned learning from a painful breakup what NOT to do to other people), but that’s not to say that purpose couldn’t be fulfilled any other way.

Yeah, I didn’t really follow that metaphor. I think the more apt thing would be to say that, while obviously you try to avoid getting hit in the face, those times you end up getting hit by a pitch can make you a better judge of curve balls, so long as you don’t let the experience terrify you out of the batter’s box

I was gonna reply to him with something like “er, nope, looks like you’re the one missing the point,” but your response was so much better.

I’m a little unclear on this even after reading the linked article. Is this just welfare for the poor, or is it a subsidy for everyone with children? If it’s the latter, I imagine it will still be an incentive for the middle and upper classes, even if they can afford to get by without it.

Good find. Especially since this tweet preceded the OP’s tweet by ~18 hours, so it clearly wasn’t a response/piggybacking.

I thought so, too, but on closer inspection there’s a bit of shadow on the “P” in “RAPE” that isn’t present on the other “P”s on the shirt, so it’s not a simple cut-and-paste job. Also, I found an old tweet by someone claiming to have seen such a shirt, which was posted six months ago:

Actually, after zooming in as far as I can go, I see just a hint of shadow on the curve of the “P” in “Rape” that is not on either of the other two “P”s. If this is ‘shopped, it’s a much more more sophisticated job than I first thought.

The only thing more annoying than people who go all #notallmen on you every time you try to talk about your experiences are the people who go all #nomenarelikethatitmustbeyourfault.

Ugh, I feel you so hard. My ex and I had so many fights over political stuff, where he’d say something just a little bit racist/sexist and I’d object, and he’d get upset that I wasn’t giving him the benefit of the doubt, and I’d give him a chance to clarify whether he really meant what I thought he meant, and he’d get

Yeah, the “P” in “Rape” could easily have been copied and pasted from “Sleep” or “Repeat.” But this could also be a parody version of the original “Rave” shirt. I’ve seen several variations on the “Eat Sleep —— Repeat” theme on T-shirts lately. Two seconds of Googling reveals the “rape” variant has existed in meme

I used to go to a shadow-cast production in Long Beach about a dozen years ago. People dressed in a sort of goth-metal-lingerie style, boys included, and there was a lingerie contest the last Saturday of every month. The winners were invariably the man and woman with the most creative costume/striptease, not the most

Ack! I’ve used up my daily quotient of squees and it’s not even noon! BRB, driving to San Diego now.

And for those of you who have experienced bullying, you know that it’s not like in the movies. It’s done quietly, when no one is around, in ways that are impossible to report.

My experience, which is not the uniform American experience but is pretty typical, was:

I just got out of the shower. Looks like I’ll have to get back in. Eugh.

I mean...how many positions were involved? BTDT, no sand in the machinery.

I want to be best friends with your best friend.
