Author knew that Jezebel is mostly pro-porn. So she was probably being tactful, in not wanting to jump on Smart for having an un-cool opinion.

Teenage boys have always had access to their father’s porn. The kid in My Secret Life masturbated to Fanny Hill as a not-very-old teenager - that was the 19th century. And when I was a kid in the ‘70s, pretty much all the kids had access to porn mags - they were shared on the street.

I meant relative to today. It was full of harmful stereotypes, too.

1. Those are individual studies, not conclusions based on multiple studies.

Whether porn is systematically destroying the moral fabric of America is a conversation for a different day . . .

We had “clean porn”. Try reading Fanny Hill sometime, or check out early Playboy. It didn’t stay that way because people habituated, and needed a stronger fix.

Thanks for the link. That particular essay, however, doesn’t really make your point. In it she says that she thinks women should decide for themselves whether and when to have children, and that voluntary BC is superior to forcing women to have/not have children. She does advocate sterilization of disabled people,

Exactly.

I’m pretty sure poor white women begged Sanger for birth control because too many pregnancies were killing them. Too many pregnancies killed her mother, too, iirc. (I read some bios of her recently and didn’t come across any really nasty eugenics. She did think the poors could be paid to have fewer children.

Needing experience to get experience has been around for a lot longer, but at least in the old days you got paid for getting that experience, once you got your foot in the door.

A friend of my brother’s did that once. One of the competing groups dyed their hair to match their outfits.

Thank you for posting the gifs.

I think the only way they can protect workers from exploitation is to ban all unpaid internships.

Yeah, I remember when summer jobs were a chance to earn money getting experience in your field. And everyone assumed that your first five years in paid employment were part of your apprenticeship, bringing you up to speed. Four years of paying for university (or more, with grad school) were considered sufficient

Quite a few of those commenters were banned from Jezebel. I can’t testify to whether they deserved it or not, but I know how I got re-greyed, and the politics here are sometimes pretty iffy.

Other places to go? Where? The other feminist blogs I’m familiar with are basically one-issue blogs. And the comment sections are less diverse than here, and therefore less open to debate. And comment sections are the consciousness-raising groups of today - we really need them.

I stand corrected. But are werewolves only male? Do we have to talk about wifwolves? Can we? Is there such thing as wifwolves (other than Rahne Sinclair, who is clearly fiction)?

It was the same bullshit in Québec a few years ago - they wanted to forbid all public servants, including teachers, from wearing any obvious religious gear (not just Muslims and Sikhs - they were targeting Jews too), but they were going to keep the big crucifix in the legislature building because heritage.

Thank you for providing a transcript.
