Wow. That was a bit more gruesome than I was thinking it was going to be.

Looking at your posts, your dominant contribution to the commentary seems to be shitting on Japan. You should probably re-examine your life.
Except that the Application Program T&Cs says that it ISN’T a contract for sale (para. 2 says it is “NOT AN OFFER OR CONTRACT FOR SALE”) and para. says that the program is just “to select individuals who will be invited to discuss a potential purchase.” So it seems hard to say that an application to participate in the…
I had to deliver papers, mow grass and shovel snow, so I hear ya.

After you have established some credit, treat any credit card like the old American Express card—pay it off every single month.
I measured my wall and the furniture, made some blocks in Powerpoint, and then sized the art to fit by importing thumbnails of the pictures. Low tech, but it works. And is particularly useful if you want a wall array of different sized prints, b/c you can then use it to figure out where all the hangers go...
This reminds me of an exercise I did in college with drawing.* The fundamental take-away was that people don’t draw what they see, they draw stylized versions of objects they have identified. So a trained artist will look at the vignette and start relating objects to each other the way it is actually seen—because they…
When you said the FCC has always been “much more lax” when it comes to content regulation of subscription media, it started me wondering... I don’t think the FCC actually has the statutory authority to reach indecent or profane content on non-broadcast channels. The FCC gets to indecency and profanity under Title 18,…
My taxes are horrifically complicated with multiple K-1s and a bunch of state filings. So I send everything to my accountant, who I love dearly, trust implicitly, and pay well.
I love pickled red onions w/tacos. I will typically boil a little sugar and rice vinegar with a bunch of whole black peppercorns and a cinnamon stick (I usually will put the peppercorns in a tied up piece of cheesecloth to avoid having to pick peppercorns out of my pickles). I then vacuum seal with the red onions,…
In the CI recipe, at least, the liquids from cooking—which have a lot of rendered pork fat in them—get reduced to a glaze that you toss the chunks in before broiling. So, yes, keeps meat from drying out (then again, we are talking about pork shoulder here, so it isn’t a huge issue anyway) and fatty glaze contributes…
As Cooks Illustrated figured out, one of the best parts of carnitas are the little browned bits. Their recipe is a slow cook, but then they get the browned bits by kind of smooshing the pork chunks a bit and sticking them under the broiler for a few. I’d link to their recipe, but it seems to be currently behind a…
Known in econ circles as the winner’s curse. Happens in any auction—the person willing to pay the most (subsidize the most) has probably overpaid because no one else, presumably, thinkks it is worth that much.
For the record, no, not employed by an ISP, much less Comcast, who I’ve hated for longer than you’ve probably been alive. Also point out that you’re engaged in an ad hominen attack, which is generally recognized as a tool of someone lacking an argument. Take on the issue, not the proponent.
You should run a search on “adblocker” on LH. It isn’t like they haven’t done their part to popularize the use of that technology and haven’t spent a lot of time discussing the evils of various ad practices. That all said, I’m too lazy to use an adblocker, so I guess I’m supporting them by ignoring their advice?
When you say “Comcast shenanigans,” are you referred to Netflix arguing Comcast throttled it when in reality Cogent—who was one of Netflix’s transit providers—selectively throttled the traffic in what appears to be an effort to make Comcast look like a bad actor (see here)? There’s a lot of ways to reach fucked up…
Networks outside your ISP can prioritize (or deprioritize) video. And that wouldn’t tell you if there is a problem with a specific streamer, which is what is implied in the article.
How do these apps decide that a speed differential is attributable to your ISP engaging in throttling, as opposed to routing or transit differences outside of your ISP’s network?
This is an awesome idea. Thank you!
