You’d be surprised how often the Lords act to block or have rewritten bad laws written by governments with bad agendas. At which point that government usually brings up the subject of Lords reform or abolishment and a battle of wills plays out. They aren’t perfect, but they have protected us on occasion.

I’m disappointed that the only two comments I found which point that out are in the grey rather than at the top.

So Fusajiro Fukui was adopted by Naoshichi Yamauchi in order to keep Haiko in the family, only for Fusajiro to ultimately leave and set up his own company. Presumably somebody else was also adopted at some point in order for a Yamauchi to still be running Haiko today.
