While rotoing *is* a comp technique, it's also an animation technique. Pretty sure this is rotoscope animation. IE: rendered in 3d, then traced with pencil and treated as though it were classical animation. The way lines and shadows bend from frame to frame seem to indicate it's not just a toon shader.

I actually felt that Dream Drop Distance was one of the worst games I've ever played. The whole monster training combined with having to do each world twice in a row thing was just not at all my cup of tea. Gave up on it shortly after Tron.
