Nope - South African. I went to college there in early the 2000 - that was kind of their golden era. Students, modders and carjackers absolutely love them! There were other engines to: 1.4 and 1.6. Archaic inside, but always a blast to drive :-)

In South Africa, the VW Golf MK1 survived until 2009 - sold as the CITI Golf. The modern Golf was sold too - but this guy was so popular they just kept refreshing it. This one was the final swan song:
