Yeah, the thing most people don't think about is that Garden/SeeD is basically an organization of child soldiers. SeeD members are not allowed normal childhoods, and clearly must find coping methods.
Squall was raised as a child soldier, with no parental figures. He came to the conclusion that isolating yourself makes you strong and that emotion and relying upon others makes you weak.
It's not my favorite (though it's up there), but I understand why for some people it could be.
