Considering how pain stakingly people like Harmy looked into extremely minor details and flaws and sought to recreate them and how well his versions have been received for the many years he’s been working them, I’d say there is a demand for the original film.

For an example of a sane and reasonable way to handle special editions, see Star Trek.

As baffling as George Lucas’s choices have been, you have to kind of respect that that the whole “One Last Time” marketing line for the 1995 VHS tapes was not a bluff. He stuck to his guns.

And that is not very good quality. Its a rip from the laser discs and itsn’t anamorphic.

Similar to Harmy’s project, there are actually people devoted to recreating the theatrical Special Editions as well.

Altering old films at all is a mistake if you supress the original product.

There is demand in the market that isn’t being met. Demands continue to be made, money left on the table.

The problem is, many people feel the films didn’t need to be brought to modern standards. Why should they be? They are products of the 70s and 80s and quite arguably very important examples of cultural products from that time. People enjoy them on that basis. They are important on that basis.

On a related note, it is hard as hell to watch the original version of THX-1138. Lucas gave that film the special edition treatment as well. The changes he made to that film actually compliment the film well but it is so odd how he supresses the original version of his own work.

The films weren’t a beta though. They were finished films that were released and enjoyed for decades and the tinkered with again and again.

I hate the CGI space battles because for me the craftsmanship of the effects are a major draw of the series and a major part of why they are a part of film history. It is ridiculous that even the Library of Congress only has the special editions.

Its complicated as while they bought Lucasfilm, Fox owns the first film until it become public domain.

Last year, Best Buy had their Black Friday deal for the PS4 Last of Us/GTA5 bundle still online in the first week of January.

Have you never seen a movie of book you’ve already have read?

Needs more dirt and grime.

You’re talking about the same group of sites that posted links to a leaked Tarantino script and then criticized him when he wasn’t happy that it was leaked.

I know plenty of people younger than 30 who are obsessed with Star Wars. You might have missed the several re-releases and the multiple prequel films that many people grew up with. Not to mention...Star War Battlefront.

I know its still just the beta but it somewhat irks that luke isn’t in his snow speeder pilot suit. It’s just another small feature that the games had a decade ago that this new one does not.

He had a massive film out in 2013, a show in 2014 and a movie out tomorrow.
