Rural Vermont, aka 99.9% of Vermont is a trip when it comes to people’s politics. Those folks can and do hold both those ideas at the same time without a hint of cognitive dissonance. It’s a thing to behold. 

Wearing the flag as apparel began as a protest in the 1960s for this reason. 

Up here in Wisconsin, anywhere rural is full of them, with absolutely no sense of irony. They’ll talk about “history” when confronted. Dude, you were born in the north, your great-great grandfather fought for the Union. Just own what you are, racist.
