This is what I thought, but for a long time now they have been trying to lock down bootloaders and there have been workarounds. HTC Desires used to be unrootable on the 0.92 bootloader, but they found a way around that that didn't require downgrading, which is also often an option.

It's all about what you want a car for. If you want to race, you want paddles. If you want your wife/friends to be able to move your car, you want auto. If you want to enjoy the drive, you want a stick. This seems to be a drivers car, not a racers car, and thus needs a 5-7 manual.
