“We all know humans and dinosaurs never coexisted [...]”

You forgot “Stop existing”.

“Lies I tell you since God put man on Earth 350 years ago.”

That’s the power of Attenborough for you.

Facts are interesting, but rarely entertaining. Science is a complex, complicated, and difficult endeavor, which already puts off many people (even though they are happy to use the products of science). It presents facts about nature, revealing that there’s no simple narrative, no black-and-white

Hasn’t this been an issue with most high-profile BBC (yes, I know, it’s Netflix, but it’s got Attenborough) documentaries? They are high-value productions (Blue Planet I & II, Planet Earth I & II, Frozen Planet etc.) with extremely beautiful, awe-inspiring footage, but with a very low “information

I think part of the problem stems from decades of Creationists trying to downplay/deny the simple fact that whales descended from land animals, therefore showing that evolution is true (as if that hinged solely on whales) and that species were not created “as is” by a supernatural entity from some ancient creation myth

Of course there’s a ton of crap on all of theses sites, stuff that should not be there. Every system, no matter how well-intentioned, will be abused by humans.

But the problem is that usually this kind of legislation is extremely broad and ill-defined, opening up all kinds of avenues for censorship and government intrusion.

Yes, that’s a tough question. The problem here is, we tend to anthropomorphize. We see behavior like this and think it’s deliberate cruelty, which may or may not be the case.

Then the bugger deserves what’s coming. No assholes on the plains!

Neither…. nor. Predator/prey interaction is always fascinating, but I almost always watch it with a detached, remote interest, not really rooting for anybody. It’s just species trying to survive. If the cheetah doesn’t kill, it’ll starve. If the wildebeest isn’t fast enough, it won’t get to munch

The same applies to the other side. Whenever science concludes that certain products are safe (e.g. GMOs), an army of people start typing, making false claims about the science, distorting evidence, claiming conspiracy. They also don’t care about science or public health, even though they claim otherwise. They won’t

Maybe you don’t understand that education is not really a factor in juror selection. You are not selected based on your expertise in a subject.

Not sure what you mean, but that’s precisely the point: a few, rich people owned all the papers & therefore had a monopoly on the news. The web gave little people a voice (with all the problems that came with that), and now the EU wants to take that away, even though they deny that, potentially turning the clock back,

Fair enough, but I prefer a bit more variety when it comes to my news. NPR is great, but a world where there’s only NPR or other deep-pocketed outlets would be a bit one-sided. And that’s the world a directive like this might produce.

It’s easy to give the last remaining news producers a chance at life if you simply shoot the competition. News organizations very often operate a business model like it’s still the 1950s, with paper prints and all, and forgot to adapt to the changing times, much like the music industry. But they have money and a

Except that the lowest common denominator can now be whoever has the deepest pockets to pay for spewing their misinformation to the public (like Faux News or the Koch brothers), with far fewer to counter the flood of bullshit.

The Chinese government is probably looking at this, facepalming, thinking “So that’s how you do it and still call it democracy!”
