It was called the “tar sands” for decades before the oil companies / Alberta decided to rebrand because that sounded too dirty. They aren’t pulling any oil out of the ground there, so “oil sands” is not accurate either.

The Canadian government just committed nearly $2B to set out of work tar sands workers to cleaning up previously abandoned fields and rigs. So we could have been doing that this whole time, and we just weren’t. Yay?
