I appreciate everyone’s answers to that comment of mine, which was hasty and clumsy. I get that her dad was just doing his job, and I respect that, and by all accounts he was a good father. It just occurred to me that that kind of cognitive dissonance over the long term can have an effect on a kid’s world view. And…
Also, smack me down if you think I’m out of line, but her mom was married to the man (her dad) who defended accused wife-beater and killer OJ. What a culture (and we’re talking well-off, well educated.) All that money and fame and we’re watching women who are basically grovelling?
If I had read this before I posted my quote, I wouldn’t have posted it, because you said it all and so well.
The “my man is just....special and I’m the only one who gets him” is written in stone in the Pantheon of Emotionally Abused Women. Whether or not Ms. K is of that guild is immaterial: she’s pimping it, it’ll be sucked up by young, vulnerable fans, and that pisses me off.
I stopped watching the Oscars back in 1985 so I figure I’ve saved 3.5 hours a year for 30 years which equals about 4 days and 8 hours, which doesn’t even come close to the years I lost smoking cigarettes. But I haven’t missed them at all.
The best was New Year’s Eve 1996. It was beastly cold in NYC (and the temperature had dropped from something like 45 at mid-day to about 10 by midnight, so no one was prepared..) And, sometimes the weight starts piling on before other symptoms of diabetes, so he may have been struggling for a while. Whatever. I hope that, now that he has a physical condition that can’t be ignored, he might get some help and moral support to deal with his beastly family.

For me, it was mostly that the movie was a Stepin Fecthit level of stereotyping of the Irish. My Irish American family coulnd’t stand it.
I meant as her character did in that creepy movie.
Right. I can’t “ignore the gender politics” any more than I could ignore the racial politics in Birth of a Nation. I’ve hated this movie since I was a kid (and I know a lot of other Irish-Americans, men and women, who have felt the same.) Maureen deserved more than to have been Wayne’s object of macho bile.

I think what with the flaming-fart idiocy that Trump and the anti-women warriors have been spewing, people (like me) are just sick to death of women being disparaged. Again. And again.
