John Oliver didn’t even mention the best part! When Trump sends him the pictures of his hands circled in gold sharpie saying: see, not so short, the writer sends them back with a note: actually, quite short.

I got too attached to Paul Watford when I saw he was on the shortlist. Young, Californian, state-school educated, would be the third black justice...and he went to my law school.
It’s not really clear from what I can gather. He hasn’t had many (if any) cases along those lines that I could find. I did find something that said his “persuasive” nature refers to the fact that he’s often able to get his conservative colleagues to vote with the liberals though, so that’s a plus (and hopefully hints…
The next pres might be able to elect 3 justices. Besides someone needs to replace RBG, Watford would be a good choice.
Hoping Garland makes the point that the Republicans are being obstructionist fuckheads and then President Hillary nominates Watford, who is RAD.
Matthew Cuthbert for SCOTUS! Fair, gentle, unwed.
... are you suggesting that Obama is trying to slide A CANADIAN onto the Supreme Court of these United States?!?
(we could probably use one)
I believe that SCOTUS will continue to function because Roberts will ensure that it does. Roberts number one concern on the court is not to “call balls and strikes” or roll back rights or follow extreme conservative principles, but to ensure the reputation of the Supreme Court. That doesn’t mean that he won’t try to…
I think it’s a pretty damned brilliant move by the POTUS.
Not to mention Orrin Hatch was singing this guy’s praises a couple of days ago. Any attempt to block him won’t be able to be spun in any way besides pure politics.
This definitely. And it’s a clever move on his part to show, “look even these assholes won’t approve what most of them would consider to be a ‘best possible choice’ candidate”. So yeah, good luck idiots with whatever liberal justice Hillary nominates.
Yeah, my ideal candidate would have been Jane Kelly, but I get the thinking here.
The other leading candidate was Sri Srinivasan, and while I was at first disappointed to here Obama was going with Garland for the same reason you are, I think it actually does Srinivasan a favor. He’s young, and certainly will have other opportunities. Had he been nominated and blocked now, that would have hurt his…
Orrin Hatch, who recently declared that the senate should not even hold hearings on a nominee, on Garland
It’s gotta be someone the Republicans won’t really hate that is a centrist. So I’m not surprised he chose a white guy. And hey, I’m sure this white guy is miles ahead of Scalia.
THis is ost likely an election strategy. Democrats will saddle vulnerable Republican Senators with this during their campaigns. This is all about flipping the Senate. Then Madame President will fill it with a boss woman.
Shrewd move on Obama’s part. Garland is a centrist who has voted with both sides in the past. Republicans are going to have a tough time justifying their fuckery. And yet...here we go, I’m sure.
