It doesn't have to match the Fire. The Fire is a 7" tablet, the iPad is 9.7", with minimum 100% more storage, up to 800%. The Fire is plastic, the iPad is aluminum. I happen to own an iPad 2 and a touchpad. IMO, the iPad is worth the premium (I can't say that about Apple's computers).

Antennagate was a hardware design failure that affected every iPhone 4 at launch. The battery issue on 4S is a software issue affecting a handful of people. Totally different problems and resolution.
