At our local Walmart, they took down the 20 items or less signs. These lanes don’t have belts, though. So I suspect that keeps most large shoppers out of them. Most 20 it less shoppers go through the self check out lanes now.

No. The idea is, that if you are face to face with a mugger, gun pointed at you, if you turn and run, you will probably get shot. So you throw the money. If  you can get 20 to 30 feet away from him, even if he shoots at you, your chance of getting hit goes way down.

Another good reason. You get mugged. Carry a cheap money clip with a few dollars in it. You get mugged, toss the clip one way, and run the other. By the time the perp picks up the cash, you are far enough away that you probably won’t get shot.
