As a former Apple repair tech, I can assure you that it wasn't often we had to repair fans on iMacs. They are sufficiently cooled.

If you break it down to a daily cost, after $200 up front, you are paying a dollar every day for just over 4 months to use Apple's iPad.

I am a pretty big Apple fanboy, and a former employee. But, I'll stick with my $85 used Kindle Fire running Jelly Bean Cyanogenmod.

I'm a pretty well ingrained Apple user, but I've been holding out some excitement for this. Apple needs REAL competition in the full sized iPad range (not just 7" $200 range), and I was hoping this would be it.

If you are a single person, 50k is not a 'very comfortable' living. Paying a premium for rent, gas, insurance, student loans, etc will make that 50k disappear pretty quickly. I go through that crunch every month.
