Smog era was a bitch. That prior engine was an L20ET, which did have (very rudimentary) EFI, but the turbo was non-intercooled, and the engine design was from the 60s (despite being built well into the 80s). It was a SOHC engine as well, and only 2V per head. Also, it was a straight 6, not a V6.
Damn, AZ-1s are hellaciously expensive. You can buy a similar Cappuccino for $8000. Not quite as desirable and quirky, but certainly not HALF as desirable and quirky (keep in mind that BaT car will go higher. The last one they sold that was almost identical went for $16K).
