Author asked what people want in EVs. A jalop answered a manual. You cannot deny that more than one gear would increase performance of an EV.

“100-155 is not a road-legal measure” haha you must be fun at the local cars-n-coffee.
Exactly. I never said they NEED it, i’m saying their performance would be better with more than one drive ratio.
They don’t have gearboxes because it’s cheaper, lighter, less complicated, and easier to use direct drive. I’m not arguing EVs NEED more than one gear, they obviously do fine without them due to their motors are oversized with crazy torque. The point is you can improve performance with more than one single drive ratio,…
Who’s comparing it to slushboxes? Current EVs, except the first tesla roadster, are direct drive. Do you think they have automatics in them? LOL
LOL the first Tesla roadster had 2 gears
Exactly. It’s almost like we’re back in the 60s talking about GM powerglides (2 speeds) and we just threw horsepower and decent torque converters at the problem. Sure, it worked, but 8 speeds make the horsepower much more usable and efficient.
If you look at the torque and power curve, you must be able to understand that peak performance requires those motors stay within the peaks at all times, from 0-200mph. To say that more than one gear would not help the motors stay within that range at all speeds between 0-200mph is to not understand that graph.
This. I think non-car people that don’t understand physics or mechanics believe the electric motors don’t have power curves. Or RPM limitations.
If you claim to be a car guy, and look at this graph of a tesla motor output, and still don’t understand how shifting gears could be beneficial for say a top speed run, I don’t really know how to help you. Do you think electric motors spin to infinity RPM???
Shifting into a 2nd gear at 150mph would not equal less torque, it allows you to get that motor back in to optimum RPM for max torque, for top-speed runs.
Excellent post. I’m a huge tesla fan and will likely own one, but my first drive in a model S just 2wks ago left me feeling the same way. Very bland, cold, automated.
This. The simpletons shaking their jowels at the idea of an EV w/manual trans fail to understand basic mechanics. Sure the base models can deal with direct drive, but with current motor technology they will be limited by the lack of more than one drive ratio. (especially top end).
Mine also. Rear camera is always dirty enough to be unusable if I even look at a gravel road. Or rainy weather. Or snowy weather that cakes up a layer of it all over the rear tailgate (and camera). They are fair-weather features.
A fair, usage-based road tax model to replace the fuel taxes they are avoiding. Our infrastructure is bad enough without being starved of tax revenue via EV tax avoidance.
Having multiple spectators killed by terrorists tends to shy people away from returning to muslim countries.
HAHAHAH Jello Picnic is a good name for this place at times!
In the hotrod world that’s called a watts link. Never heard of DeDion?
All correct except #3, range anxiety will be a tougher issue for those that actually tow things (boats, campers, toy trailers) with their truck. Efficiency goes down the drain, so either the battery pack has to be gigantic, or people will be afraid to leave town with a trailer.
HAHA came here to post that I’ve done it many times on my liter bike.....no top, sides, floor, airbags, or crumple zones!
